Ever thought about growing food locally?
As we aim to become a model 21st-century estate, one of Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team’s key goals is to make the estate carbon-neutral by 2030! A key part of this goal is the creation and development of garden spaces on the estate, as well as increasing access to food-growing.
Growing food and gardening can be a rewarding experience. This page provides a guide for a circular approach to food from how to grow it to current options for preventing food waste as well as how to compost. Through funding from the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL) and the environmental charity Hubbub, we are continuing to expand the amount of fresh food grown on the Lancaster West estate.
The NCIL funding was pioneered by a resident in partnership with the LWRA and enabled us to deliver this food-growing guide as well as some of the new food-growing infrastructure now available on the estate. There are several different spaces around the estate where food is grown, please have a look at the map to familiarise yourself with these spaces!

How to reduce food waste?
The community fridge aims to reduce food waste through redistributing and using food.
Working in partnership with the LWRA we receive donations through the Felix Project and the City Harvest. These donations are then used to stock the community fridge as well as to support the community meals held in the North Kensington Resource Centre. The fridge can be found in the Garden Cafe at Baseline Business Studios.
If you have surplus food that you are likely to not finish before its expiration date, please feel free to place it in the fridge for someone else to use. This way we can work together in reducing food waste.
The gardening team frequently adds fresh herbs to the fridge. We are currently expanding the amount of food that we grow on the estate so keep an eye out for that!

Would you like to learn more about food and garden waste?
We are working on expanding the amount of food waste bins that we have available around the estate, and through 2024 aim for every home on the Lancaster West Estate to have one.
Currently, there are three drop-off points for food waste:-Hurstway Walk-Testerton Walk -Barandon Walk.
If you would like a personal food waste bin, please reach out to Ruby.Harvey@rbkc.gov.uk
You will be provided with a small caddy and food waste bags. Once the baggy is full you can drop it off in one of the collection points.
